What is AI visibility?
AI visibility is how easily AI assistants like ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Gemini and Google's AI Overviews can find your website, read it and recommend it. You'll also see it called LLM visibility, AI search visibility or website visibility in AI search.
It has two layers. Access: can AI crawlers reach and read your pages? Presence: once they can, do AI answers mention you? This free AI visibility checker tests access, the layer everything else depends on. If a crawler is locked out, nothing you publish can be cited. Our guide How to Check Your AI Visibility covers both layers step by step.
What this AI visibility checker tests
1. Crawler access in your robots.txt (18 crawlers)
We read your robots.txt and apply the same matching rules Google documents: a crawler with its own section follows only that section, the longest matching rule wins, and Allow wins a tie. Then we report every crawler as allowed or blocked, in three groups:
| Group | Crawlers | If you block them |
|---|---|---|
| Search engines | Googlebot, Bingbot | You disappear from search and from most AI answers, since Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT search and Copilot draw on these indexes. |
| AI search and assistants | OAI-SearchBot, ChatGPT-User, Claude-SearchBot, Claude-User, PerplexityBot, Perplexity-User, DuckAssistBot, Applebot | Your pages can't appear or be cited in AI answers. We recommend allowing all of them. |
| AI training | GPTBot, ClaudeBot, Google-Extended, Applebot-Extended, CCBot, Meta-ExternalAgent, Bytespider, Amazonbot | Models stop training on your content. On its own, this doesn't remove you from AI search. It's a business choice, not an error. |
We also flag a robots.txt with no Sitemap: line, and a robots.txt that can't be read at all, which many crawlers treat as "stay out".
2. Your llms.txt file
llms.txt is a short Markdown summary of your most important pages, written for AI tools. We check whether it exists, whether your server returns a real text file rather than a web page, whether it has a title line and links, and whether a sample of those links still loads. No llms.txt yet? The LLMs.txt Generator builds one from your sitemap.
3. Signals on your homepage
We look for a noindex instruction in the page's robots meta tag or in the X-Robots-Tag header, AI opt-out tags (noai, noimageai), and how much text is readable without JavaScript. Most AI crawlers don't run scripts, so a homepage with fewer than about 150 words in its raw HTML gets flagged.
Your AI visibility result, explained
Many tools give an AI visibility score out of 100. We give you a verdict instead, because a number doesn't tell you what to fix. The verdict comes from the most serious issue we find:
| Verdict | What triggers it | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Your site is open to AI search tools | No high or medium issues | Access is fine. Work on presence: brand signals, schema and content. |
| AI tools can reach your site, with room to improve | Medium issues, such as no llms.txt, broken llms.txt links or little text without JavaScript | Fix them this week. |
| AI tools may not be able to find or cite your site | High issues, such as blocked search engines or AI search crawlers, an unreadable robots.txt or a noindex homepage | Fix them today, before anything else. |
What no robots.txt checker can see: your firewall
robots.txt is a request. Your firewall, CDN or bot protection decides who actually gets in. Cloudflare, for example, can block AI crawlers even when robots.txt welcomes them, and the crawler then gets a 403 error or a challenge page instead of your content. This happened on our own site. Test yours with one line in Terminal:
curl -s -o /dev/null -w "%{http_code}" -A "GPTBot/1.1" https://yoursite.com/
A 200 means the door is open. A 403 or 429 means something is turning AI crawlers away, so check your firewall's bot settings.
AI visibility checker vs. SEO checker
| Question | SEO checker | AI visibility checker |
|---|---|---|
| Main question | How well can my pages rank in search? | Can AI assistants reach, read and cite my pages? |
| Crawlers it cares about | Googlebot, Bingbot | Googlebot and Bingbot, plus AI search, assistant and training crawlers |
| Typical checks | Titles, links, speed, indexing | Per-crawler robots.txt rules, llms.txt, AI opt-out tags, text without JavaScript |
They overlap, because AI search leans on search indexes. Keep your important pages indexed in Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools too. Making your pages easy for answer engines like ChatGPT and Perplexity to find, trust and cite is called generative engine optimization (GEO), and access is its first step.
Fix what the checker finds
- A crawler is blocked by mistake: the Robots.txt Generator loads your current file, keeps your rules and builds a verified version.
- No llms.txt, or broken links in it: the LLMs.txt Generator creates one from your sitemap in seconds.
- Content only appears after JavaScript, on any page: Owl-gorithm Hacker compares raw and rendered HTML across your site.
- AI can reach you but doesn't describe you well: Generative Engine Owl finds missing schema and pages that describe you differently, and suggests the fix.

Frequently asked questions
Is this AI visibility checker really free?
Yes. It's free with no sign-up and no limit on how many sites you check. You don't need a CMO Owls account to use it.
Do you store the websites I check?
No. The check runs once and the results are shown only to you. We don't save the address or the results.
What does the AI Visibility Checker test?
It reads your robots.txt and tests it against 18 crawlers: search engines, AI search and assistant crawlers, and AI training crawlers. It checks whether you publish a valid llms.txt file and whether its links load. And it scans your homepage for a noindex instruction, AI opt-out tags such as noai, and how much text is readable without JavaScript.
What is the difference between AI training crawlers and AI search crawlers?
Training crawlers such as GPTBot and ClaudeBot collect content to train AI models. Search and assistant crawlers such as OAI-SearchBot, Claude-SearchBot and PerplexityBot decide whether your pages can appear and be cited in AI answers. You can block training and still stay visible in AI search.
Does blocking GPTBot remove me from ChatGPT?
No. GPTBot collects training data. ChatGPT search uses OAI-SearchBot, and pages requested during a chat are fetched by ChatGPT-User. Blocking GPTBot alone doesn't remove you from ChatGPT search results.
My robots.txt allows AI crawlers. Can they still be blocked?
Yes. Firewalls and bot protection, including Cloudflare's AI bot settings, can block AI crawlers before they ever read robots.txt. This checker reads your robots.txt rules but can't see your firewall, so run the one-line Terminal test on this page as well.
What is a good AI visibility score?
There's no shared standard, so scores from different AI visibility tools can't be compared. Instead of a number, this checker gives one of three verdicts based on the most serious issue it finds. Aim for "Your site is open to AI search tools".
How is this different from Semrush, Ahrefs or other AI visibility tools?
Most AI visibility tools track presence: how often AI answers mention your brand. This checker tests access: whether AI crawlers can reach and read your site in the first place. Presence depends on access, so it's the place to start.
How often should I check my AI visibility?
After any change to your robots.txt, firewall, CDN or site builder, and at least once a month.
