What is llms.txt?

llms.txt is a plain text file, written in Markdown, at the root of your website (yoursite.com/llms.txt). It gives AI tools a short summary of your business and links to your most important pages, so they know what to read first. Think of it as a sitemap written for AI: short, readable, and curated rather than complete. The format was proposed at llmstxt.org.

Be realistic about what it does. llms.txt isn't a ranking factor, and Google has said it doesn't use it. It's an emerging convention that costs nothing to add, so it's worth having, alongside the things that matter more for AI visibility: crawler access, readable pages and clear structured data.

How this llms.txt generator works

  • It finds your pages: from the Sitemap lines in your robots.txt or from /sitemap.xml, following one level of sitemap index. No sitemap? It uses the links on your homepage instead.
  • It keeps your own words: each entry uses the page's own title and meta description. No AI rewrites anything.
  • It groups by section: pages are grouped by the first folder in their URL, such as Blog or Pricing.
  • It stays short: up to 25 pages, with files like images and PDFs skipped. You can edit everything before you copy or download it.

The llms.txt format, with an example

A good llms.txt has three parts: a title line, a one-sentence summary introduced with a greater-than sign (>), and sections of Markdown links, each with a short description. Here's an llms.txt example for a small business:

# Example Co

> Example Co makes scheduling software for dental clinics.

## Main pages

- [Pricing](https://www.example.com/pricing/): Plans and what each one includes
- [Features](https://www.example.com/features/): Online booking, reminders and reporting

## Blog

- [How to reduce no-shows](https://www.example.com/blog/reduce-no-shows/): Five tactics that work for clinics

That's the whole format. If your pages already have clear titles and meta descriptions, the generator produces this for you in seconds. If they don't, the file shows you exactly which pages need better descriptions, which also helps your search snippets.

How to publish your llms.txt

  1. Create llms.txt with the generator above, and review each description.
  2. Save it as llms.txt and upload it to the root folder of your website.
  3. Open yourdomain.com/llms.txt in a browser and confirm it loads as plain text, not as a web page.
  4. Run the free AI Visibility Checker. It checks that your llms.txt has a title, links, and no broken links.

Also make sure the crawlers that would read it can reach your site at all. The Robots.txt Generator shows and fixes which ones your robots.txt blocks.

Frequently asked questions

What is llms.txt?

llms.txt is a plain text Markdown file at the root of your website that gives AI tools a short summary of your business and a list of your most important pages. It follows the format proposed at llmstxt.org and works like a sitemap written for AI.

How does this llms.txt generator work?

It reads your sitemap, or the links on your homepage if there's no sitemap, collects the title and description of up to 25 pages, and arranges them in the llms.txt format, grouped by section. No AI is used, so the file says exactly what your pages say about themselves.

Where do I upload the file?

Save it as llms.txt and upload it to the root of your website, so it loads at yourdomain.com/llms.txt as plain text. Review the descriptions first and edit anything you'd like to phrase differently.

Does llms.txt improve rankings or AI visibility?

It isn't an established ranking factor, and Google has said it doesn't use it. It's an emerging convention: free to add, quick to maintain, and a clear, accurate summary for any AI tool that reads it.

What is llms-full.txt?

An optional companion file that contains the full text of your key pages in one Markdown document, rather than links to them. This generator creates the standard llms.txt.

Do I still need a sitemap and robots.txt?

Yes. They do different jobs. robots.txt controls which crawlers may visit, sitemap.xml lists every page for search engines, and llms.txt is a short, readable summary of your most important pages.

Why only 25 pages?

llms.txt is meant to be a short guide to what matters most, not a full index. You can edit the file before you copy it to add or swap pages.

What do you do with my website?

We read your public homepage, robots.txt and sitemap to build the file. Nothing is stored.
