Pick a type, fill in the fields and copy the JSON-LD into your page's <head>. Required fields are marked with *.

At a glance

  • The checker reads every JSON-LD block on a page and reports errors, missing fields, the wrong type and prices that don't match.
  • The generator builds Organization, LocalBusiness, SoftwareApplication, Article and FAQ markup you can paste straight into your page.
  • Valid markup makes a page eligible for rich results. It doesn't guarantee them.

What the schema markup checker finds

Most schema problems aren't missing markup; they're markup that says the wrong thing. These are the five the checker looks for:

What the schema checker finds
ProblemExampleWhy it matters
Broken codeOne missing comma or quoteSearch engines ignore the whole block
Missing required fieldsA Product with no offers, an Article with no headlineThe markup can't earn rich results
Wrong typeProduct on a software or subscription pageGoogle asks for shipping, returns and barcodes
Price mismatchA price in the code that isn't on the pageSearch engines and AI repeat the wrong price
Weak brand signalsOrganization without sameAs or alternateNameAI tools struggle to connect your profiles to one company

The one word that put our pricing page in Merchant listings

Google Search Console once flagged our pricing page under Merchant listings: missing image, shipping details, return policy and barcode. We sell software. The cause was one word, "@type": "Product", which tells Google you're selling a physical item. We changed it to SoftwareApplication, and the same check found an old price in our homepage markup that we no longer charged. Run through this checker today, our pricing page reports BreadcrumbList and SoftwareApplication with no issues, and our homepage reports SoftwareApplication, Organization and WebSite, also clean.

Adding schema to a page, step by step

  1. Pick the type that describes the page from the table above. One page can have several, such as Organization plus BreadcrumbList.
  2. Generate the code with the generator on this page, filling in every field marked with *.
  3. Paste it into the page's head, or into your SEO plugin's schema field.
  4. Check the live page here to catch typos, missing fields and prices that don't match.
  5. Confirm in Google's Rich Results Test and watch the Enhancements reports in Search Console. If the page doesn't appear at all, check it can be indexed with the Indexability Checker.

Why brand markup matters for AI answers

AI assistants build their picture of a company from many sources. Organization markup with sameAs links to your official profiles and an alternateName for other spellings of your brand helps them recognise that your website, your LinkedIn page and your X account belong to the same business. It's a small block of code with an outsized effect on being described correctly.

Where the schema checker stops

  • JSON-LD only. Microdata and RDFa are counted but not checked field by field.
  • The common types. Field checks cover the types Google documents most: Organization, LocalBusiness, Product, SoftwareApplication, Article, FAQPage, BreadcrumbList and Event.
  • One page at a time. To check schema across a whole site, use Generative Engine Owl.

Frequently asked questions

Is the schema checker free?

Yes. Both the checker and the generator are free, with no sign-up. We don't store the pages you check.

How is this different from Google's Rich Results Test?

Google's test tells you whether a page is eligible for Google's rich results. This checker also catches mistakes that confuse search engines and AI tools even when the markup is valid: the wrong type, such as Product on a software page, prices that don't match the page, and missing brand signals like sameAs and alternateName. Use both.

Is this a schema validator?

Partly. It parses every JSON-LD block, reports syntax errors and checks the fields Google documents for the common types. It doesn't validate every property in the full Schema.org vocabulary, and it only reads JSON-LD, not Microdata or RDFa.

Which schema type should a software company use?

SoftwareApplication for the product, Organization for the company on the homepage, and Article or BlogPosting for posts. Avoid Product: Google treats it as a physical item and starts asking for shipping, returns and barcodes.

Why does Product markup on a software page matter?

Google expects Product to describe something physical for sale and checks it for merchant details. It happened to us: Search Console listed our pricing page under Merchant listings, missing shipping and return policies, until we changed one word to SoftwareApplication.

Should I add ratings to get stars in search results?

Only if they're real reviews shown on the page. Made-up or self-written ratings break Google's guidelines and can lead to a manual action, which removes rich results across your site.

Does FAQ schema still show in Google?

Since 2023 Google shows FAQ rich results only for well-known government and health websites. The markup can still help other search engines and AI tools read your questions and answers, so keep it for real questions that appear on the page.

How long until schema changes show in Google?

Google has to recrawl the page first, which can take days or weeks. Request indexing in Search Console to speed it up, and remember that valid markup makes a page eligible for rich results, not guaranteed to get them.

Where do I put the generated code?

In the page's head, inside a script tag of type application/ld+json, exactly as the generator outputs it. In WordPress, an SEO plugin or a header-code plugin can add it without editing theme files.
